Dr Kerry Jewell on being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer weeks after her first novel came out
Dr Kerry Jewell was a second-year resident when she began capturing the mix of heartbreaking and absurd scenes she had just witnessed on one especially chaotic night shift.
Around three or four in the morning, during a brief lull in admissions, she opened a blank document and started writing.
Before finishing the shift, she emailed it to herself, unsure whether she would ever return to it.
Those early notes became the basis of a chapter in A Little Unwell, published in late April, her novel about the roller-coaster of junior doctor life and one she wishes had existed when she was starting out.
