NIP axes two pneumococcal vaccines for children in favour of 20-valent shot
Prevenar 20 is now the only pneumococcal vaccine funded on the National Immunisation Program for children after replacing both Pneumovax 23 and Prevenar 13 this month.
The new National Immunisation Program (NIP) listing covers at least three doses for all children — at two, four and 12 months.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are recommended to receive an additional dose at six months, as are other children with specified risk factors, such as congenital heart disease or cochlear implants.
Those aged 1-17 who are diagnosed with specified medical conditions are recommended to receive a single shot of Prevenar 20 upon diagnosis.
