Minister for Health Greg Hunt has laid part of the blame for a sharp rise in coronavirus cases internationally on a pandemic response model the AMA has proposed for Australia.

Labor and the AMA have backed a Centre for Disease Control (CDC) model of dealing with pandemics, which is used in the US and Europe.

The AMA says Australia would be well served with a body tasked with preserving health and preparing for future threats.

But Mr Hunt told parliament on Thursday that it was likely the world would hit the milestone of 50 million cases of COVID-19 and 1.25 million lives lost within the next two weeks.
