No high-THC scripts, mandatory in-person consults — DVA cracks down on medicinal cannabis

The new Department of Veterans’ Affairs guidance applies immediately to new patients.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs has stopped funding high-tetrahydrocannabinol cannabis for new patients.

New guidance released on Monday has introduced both a daily dose cap of 2g and a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration limit of 25% or less for dried medicinal cannabis.

The Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) said the suite of changes — including no longer funding gummies or pastilles — was a response to concerning prescribing habits it had seen that prioritised profit over wellbeing and put veterans at risk.

Evidence increasingly showed that high-dose THC and products with high THC concentrations were harming patients, with insufficient evidence of benefits, it warned.
