An ongoing amoxicillin syrup shortage has left many GPs with no other option than to advise parents to crush adult doses for children or prescribe a ‘less targeted’ antibiotic, the RACGP says.

Last week, the TGA advised that all strengths of amoxicillin syrup, capsules and tables were in short supply due to manufacturing issues at a major supplier.

RACGP rural health chair Dr Michael Clements said the shortages had now reached a critical stage.

“[We’ve] just been told by the pharmacist amoxicillin is not available in syrup form,” Townsville-based Dr Clements told 6minutes.
