Not just junior doctors: Aussie study tracks fatigue and sleep loss among consultants on call

About half the calls occurred between 10pm and 6am, the authors say.

Caring for junior doctors — burnt out and fatigued by gruelling shift patterns — has long been a hot topic in medicine.

But what about their senior colleagues: those on call who are phoned or texted through the night when issues get complex?

Although much evidence has been gathered on junior doctors, little research has examined the impact of on-call work on the sleep of hospital specialists, University of Newcastle researchers write.

They collected data from almost 170 surgeons on call at four hospitals in NSW.
