NSW Premier told to reveal dealings with his Pharmacy Guild ‘friends’

The RACGP calls for the release of all advice in relation to Premier Chris Minns' government's plans to radically extend pharmacy prescribing.

The RACGP is demanding that the NSW Premier disclose details of every “meeting, communication and exchange of policy advice” with the Pharmacy Guild of Australia over his government’s radical expansion of pharmacist prescribing.

The college says the public deserves to know how much influence the guild has exerted over the reforms, which will allow pharmacists to prescribe for chronic and complex conditions, including hypertension and COPD.

“Premier Chris Minns announced these reforms at a pharmacy guild conference. From the outside, this looks like lobbyist-led health policy, plain and simple,” said RACGP President Michael Wright.

The demand comes amid concerns about the clinical evidence underpinning the reforms, with Dr Wright arguing there was still no robust independent evidence that pharmacist prescribing for complex conditions was safe, improved patient outcomes or reduced pressure on the health system.
