Woman diagnosed with anorexia made final plea for better treatment of eating disorders before her death

The SA Coroner recommended a review of bed numbers and a change to inpatient care after the death of Jennifer Michelle Matters.

In a letter written before her death, Jennifer Matters wrote to her psychiatrist at the specialist eating disorder service where she was being treated.

She said she hoped what had happened to her might lead to reform that would help others — “even just one person”.

Ms Matters was 24 and weighed 29.5kg when she died in Adelaide in June 2021 after a two-year struggle with anorexia nervosa.

Now, the inquest into her death has prompted a series of recommendations aimed at addressing the barriers she encountered while trying to access treatment.
