A prominent GP on the MBS Review Taskforce committee calling for nurse practitioners to access MBS care plan items and prescribe independently of doctors has had his name removed from its expert report.

The report has provoked a stormy backlash after it declared the restrictions on Medicare were stopping patients from choosing to see a nurse instead of a GP.

Critically, it also called for the dismantling of current Medicare requirements that nurses draw up a formal agreement on their scope of practice with doctors before prescribing and initiating treatments.

The Nurse Practitioner Reference Group was made up of nine nurses, two consumer representatives and two doctors, including former AMA president Dr Steve Hambleton.
