Nurse who gave wrong patient hepatitis B vax escapes suspension

The registered nurse tried to cover up his mistake by injecting the intended patient with water and falsifying the notes, NSW tribunal hears

A nurse who administered a vaccine to the wrong patient, and then injected the intended patient with water and falsified medical records to cover his mistake, has escaped suspension.

But the registered nurse has had several conditions slapped on his registration, including a ban on administering medications unless under direct supervision of another registered nurse.

The nurse was working in the inpatient addiction unit at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney in March 2020 when he inoculated patient A against hepatitis B.

He recorded the vaccination in the patient’s medical records, along with the lot label for the vaccine, the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal heard.
