Gynaecologists refuse to provide non-critical care until hospital’s ‘dangerously’ low staffing is fixed

Dr Kelly Hankins is one of nine doctors demanding more staff as 'close calls' increase.

O&Gs say they are so concerned about “dangerously” low staffing levels they have refused to provide non-urgent gynaecological treatments.

The nine doctors work at Gosford Hospital and Wyong Hospital in NSW and have told colleagues they are stopping all elective, non-life-threatening gynaecological care, restricting their services to critical care until more staff are hired.

In the case of Wyong Hospital no services will be offered by the doctors until staffing is increased, but the doctors will continue to offer all obstetric services.

“Our department has been slowly depleted over many years and is currently stretched thin, to dangerous levels,” the doctors wrote in a letter to staff.
