Adjunct Clinical Professor Karen Price is the RACGP president who four years ago urged GPs to abandon universal bulk-billing given the paucity of Medicare rebates to fund quality care.

For many it was one of the most significant public statements made by any president of the college in the last 20 years.

So what is her reaction to the Federal Government’s $8.5 billion plan to resurrect universal bulk-billing — a plan which will be made real whatever the result of the federal election, given that Opposition leader Peter Dutton is also committed to its introduction?

“It’s just about the electioneering, isn’t it?” Professor Price says.
