Barely half of doctors understand Medicare item requirements or know where to find information on billing, suggests a medical defence organisaton survey. 

In a survey of 1503 Avant members, only 55% said they understood MBS requirements and 42% said they had no processes to check what claims were made under their provider number. 

Around 60% said they knew where to source information about Medicare billing, according to the survey, conducted in September last year and published this Thursday.

A follow-up survey of 432 members in February 2023 found that 70% said they now understood MBS item requirements.
