Only one in four women return to use frozen eggs, study finds
Planned egg freezing has increased 20-fold over the past decade, yet only one in four women return to thaw their eggs within 10 years, according to Australian research.
The study, published in Human Reproduction, aimed to identify trends in planned egg freezing (PEF), characteristics of the women electing to undergo PEF, and the outcomes for women who returned to thaw their frozen eggs.
Analysing data from the Australian and New Zealand Assisted Reproduction Database, it found 20,209 women undertook PEF between 2009 and 2023.
On average, they underwent 1.5 oocyte collection cycles and froze 12 eggs in total; almost all women (98.6%) were nulliparous and were typically aged 34-38.
