Last month, a landmark analysis by the GP college presidents revealed the list of medical schools most likely to generate future GPs.
They compared the alma mater of registrars who started GP training in 2025 with the average number of medical graduates from 21 universities from 2019 to 2023 to estimate the proportion of students from each university pursuing a GP career (see their results here or at the end of this article).
Their rankings put Queensland’s James Cook University first, while the sandstone universities generally performed poorly, with the University of Tasmania the exception.
AusDoc has now surveyed 300 of its readers on their medical school experiences and whether a future life as a GP was encouraged or not.
