More than 30 doctors reported to AHPRA for not checking SafeScript software
Victoria’s Department of Health is referring dozens of doctors to AHPRA each year for failing to check the SafeScript real-time prescription monitoring software, officials have revealed.
SafeScript flags possible signs of doctor-shopping with Victorian prescribers and pharmacists, as part of efforts to curb overdose deaths, and has been mandatory to check since 2020.
If doctors do not check SafeScript before prescribing opioids, benzodiazepines or other monitored drugs, the software sends an alert to the department, which triggers a ‘please explain’ letter to the doctor.
A department spokesperson said around 800 doctors a year received letters.
