‘Surprise’ microbe overtakes salmonella as second most common cause of gastro

An “overlooked” microbe, aeromonas, has been found to be the second most common bacterial cause of gastroenteritis in Australia, yet it is barely tested for, researchers say.Â
Until now, salmonella was believed to be the second most common enteric bacteria causing gastroenteritis, behind campylobacter, the UNSW Sydney authors wrote.Â
But they said in “surprising” results, based on over 340,000 samples, aeromonas were shown to be the second most prevalent enteric bacterial pathogen across all age groups.Â
And among babies aged 6-18 months, it was the leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis.
