Patient dies while nurse watches soccer World Cup

A nurse who admitted to watching the 2018 Men’s FIFA World Cup football final while he was meant to be providing one-on-one care to a patient who died has been found guilty of professional misconduct.
The NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal found the registered nurse failed to take observations and to reattach telemetry leads that had been disconnected by the acute care patient.
The 78-year-old man was found unresponsive at 5am and telemetry data showed he suffered ventricular fibrillation between 1.47am and 1.54am, during the broadcast of the final on 16 July 2018.
While the nurse had visual contact with the patient from the nurses’ bay, it was not an appropriate level of observation given the telemetry had been disconnected, the tribunal found.
