Patient picked wrong nurse to attack — this RN knew martial arts
Daniel Nelson used a decade's worth of jiu-jitsu training to restrain an attacker in a Brisbane hospital.
Daniel Nelson has been dubbed the ‘Jiu-jitsu Nurse’ after a video of him tackling an aggressive patient to the ground using well-honed martial arts skills went viral.
But the RN says he shared the CCTV footage on social media to make a serious point about violence against healthcare workers, who shouldn’t have to accept it as “part of the job”.
The event took place two years ago, during a night shift at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, when he overheard an intoxicated patient being abusive.
“The patient had been verbally abusing staff, spitting on the floor and behaving aggressively,” Mr Nelson, an Australian Army nurse who’d been on placement at the time, said in a LinkedIn post last month.
