Payroll tax: NSW Opposition backs amnesty for GPs

The NSW Opposition will try to change legislation in order to protect GPs from retrospective payroll tax audits and exempt them from payroll tax for the next two years.
A new tax ruling in NSW and Victoria this month confirmed that GPs could be deemed employees, not contractors, making practices potentially liable for years of unpaid payroll tax.
Despite calls from the RACGP and state AMA, the NSW Government has not followed Queensland and SA with short-term payroll tax exemptions for GP practices.
On Tuesday, Opposition Treasurer Damien Tudehope declared that payroll tax was “creating a crisis” for GP practices.
