GP practices facing payroll tax bills will raise their standard consultation fees by $12 on average, according to a survey by GP booking site HotDoc.

The national survey of GPs from 310 practices found that 95% would hike fees if faced with payroll tax and 16% of these practices could close on the back of a payroll tax bill.

HotDoc CEO Dr Ben Hurst said further analysis had uncovered a rise in practice closures among its customers, from 15 closures in 2020/21 to 93 closures in 2022/23.

He said the boost to general practice through the tripled bulk-billing incentives would be more than wiped out by payroll tax.
