PBAC backs GPs to initiate second-line ADHD medications
GPs will be able to initiate second-line ADHD treatments atomoxetine and guanfacine when stimulants are not tolerated or ineffective if the latest PBAC recommendations are approved.
At its September meeting, the committee recommended relaxing the prescribing restrictions on the two medications, which can currently only be initiated by a paediatrician or psychiatrist.
This would help to align PBS restrictions with contemporary Australian clinical guidelines, it says, with a further review of PBS-listed stimulants for ADHD still to come.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing has confirmed that the PBAC’s recommendation would extend to any medical practitioner, including nurse practitioners.
