‘People are close to despair’: The workforce trend threatening the viability of inpatient psychiatry

It has become increasingly difficult to attract younger doctors to inpatient roles, psychiatrists say.

A 58-bed private psychiatric hospital closed its doors for good last month.

Toowong Private Hospital in Brisbane moved to a wind-down plan after administrators received no “viable” interest from potential buyers, according to a statement.

Insurance shortfalls, coupled with rising treatment costs, were reportedly a major factor.

However, psychiatrists say that is only part of the tale — the bigger story is the decline in admitting psychiatrists threatening the availability of private treatment.
