Pets give people a reason to live, shows Aussie study

People older than 60 are more likely to take their own lives than any other age group in Australia, but now a new study has found having a furry friend can save their lives.
The University of South Australia research found being in the company of a dog, cat or bird gives older people a reason to live.
More than one-third of the study’s participants aged 60-83 who reported being “actively suicidal” or “significantly traumatised” said taking responsibility for their pet gave them purpose.
They also said pet companionship reduced feelings of loneliness and despair.
