Pharmacists will diagnose and prescribe antibiotics for impetigo — based on a single Scottish trial

Dr Evan Ackermann addresses Queensland Health's 'vague' protocol for treating impetigo.

In the final part of our series unpicking the clinical basis of dramatically expanded pharmacist prescribing, Dr Evan Ackermann examines the protocols published by Queensland Health for the treatment of impetigo.

The evidence base for pharmacist treatment is poor, and of limited relevance to a tropical region where impetigo is a significant public health issue, Dr Ackermann says.

“Unfortunately, this pilot is about pharmacist prescribing, and it seems to be without the full backup and analysis that a public health trial would support,” he states.
