Pharmacy guild wants 80% of pharmacists prescribing S4 drugs within 10 years

The guild claims that undergraduate pharmacy degrees will cover 'safe and effective' S4 prescribing.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia wants 80% of pharmacists to prescribe S4 drugs by 2035, according to its “bold and practical” strategic plan published this week.

Called Towards 2035, the 48-page plan states: “Our strategic vision includes a bold goal: to have 80% of Australian community pharmacists qualified as prescribing pharmacists by 2035.

“Over the next few years, the prescribing qualification will be embedded into the base registerable pharmacy degree, ensuring every new graduate enters the profession with the clinical capabilities to prescribe safely and effectively,” it adds.

Queensland first allowed pharmacists with extra training to independently diagnose and write S4 scripts for 16 conditions in April 2024, as well as prescribe S4 drugs in collaboration with a doctor for asthma, COPD, or cardiovascular risk.
