Plastic surgeon awarded $50,000 over defamatory online review

The sum was 'sufficient consolation' for Dr Peter Callan's hurt feelings, said a Federal Court judge.

A respected plastic surgeon has been awarded $50,000 after a former patient wrote a one-star online review about the “emotional impact” of a “failed” rhinoplasty.

Dr Peter Callan launched legal action after Zachariah Chawk claimed to have a “disappointing outcome” from surgery to correct nasal valve collapse caused by a deviated septum.

Mr Chawk’s post was viewed about 3800 times on RealSelf, a rating website for cosmetic and plastic surgeons.

Alleging that only one side had been corrected, Mr Chawk claimed he now had the “challenge” of finding a different surgeon to “help him achieve a better outcome”.
