Podiatrists say they may have hit on an ideal first-line treatment for select patients with recalcitrant or multiple plantar warts — a cantharidin-podophyllin-salicylic acid formulation.

They made the call after successfully treating a patient with multiple treatment-resistant warts.

Their 53-year-old patient first presented to the podiatry clinic at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, in September 2021 with multiple recalcitrant plantar warts, which had developed over several years.

The woman had previously been treated with 10 sessions of cryotherapy for a wart on the metatarsal head of her right hallux from late 2019 to early 2020, but total remission was not achieved.
