Poor lung function may increase risk of heart failure

Impairment appears to represent an important yet under-appreciated cardiac risk factor for heart failure, US researchers say

Obstructive or restrictive pulmonary disease is independently associated with an increased risk of heart failure according to a new cohort study.

The risk is particularly high in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, the US researchers say.

The team from Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City analysed pooled data from eight US population-based cohorts that enrolled participants from 1987 to 2004.

All participants had lung function impairment, either obstructive (forced expiratory volume [FEV] in 1s/forced vital capacity [FVC], 0.70) or restrictive (FEV1/FVC, 0.70 or more; FVC, 80%).
