Post-MI survival in Australia ‘among world’s best’

A major study pinpoints gaps in care, particularly for the elderly

Long-term survival following acute MI in Australia is now among the world’s best, although there’s room for improvement for older patients and those with non-ST elevation MI, a study shows.

A seven-year survival rate of more than 85% among adults younger than 65 is attributable to significant advances in treatments offered both in and out of hospital, the researchers say.

Overall survival was 62%, they found in the first Australian and New Zealand population assessment of long-term survival following acute MI.

The team analysed outcome data from nearly 240,000 adults (mean age 69) hospitalised between 2009 and 2015.
