‘Pre-competent’ candidates may have received psychiatry fellowships, research suggests

Critics are protesting against the decision to replace the OSCE fellowship assessment.

Fresh concerns have emerged about so-called ‘pre-competent’ psychiatry registrars being awarded fellowships after the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists ditched its OSCE assessment.

A new research paper says that the pass rates for the “gold-standard” clinical exam had ranged from 66% to 72% in the four years before the COVID-19 pandemic at which point the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) replaced it.
