An obstetrician treating a pregnant woman said she had initially prioritised delivering the baby over administering antibiotics for sepsis, an inquest has heard.

Annie O’Brien, 37, died from multi-organ failure caused by the infection within hours of delivering her baby stillborn at 18 weeks’ gestation and less than 24 hours after falling ill.

When Ms O’Brien, the daughter of GP Dr Brian Moylan, first reported gastroenteritis symptoms, another obstetrician had prescribed rest and paracetamol.

But after her condition did not improve she went to Holmesglen Private Hospital in Melbourne.
