Australian paediatric registrar who became ISIS doctor ‘found alive in Iraqi prison’
Dr Tareq Kamleh trained as a paediatric registrar in Australia before travelling to Syria in 2015.
A former Australian paediatric registrar who joined Islamic State in 2015, long presumed dead, is alive in a Baghdad prison, The Australian reports.
It had been speculated that Dr Tareq Kamleh, a Perth-born doctor who travelled to Syria a decade ago, died in 2017 during a four-month battle at the then de facto Islamic State (IS) capital in Syria, Raqqa.
But The Australian reported on Tuesday that Dr Kamleh was one of 13 imprisoned Australian men linked to IS, having survived the battle before being arrested in 2019.
It said Iraqi court documents detailed Dr Kamleh’s arrest and his role in the IS ‘health department’.
