Private contractors will be barred from running acute public hospitals after toddler’s death

Private contractors will be barred from running acute public hospitals under new NSW laws introduced in the wake of toddler Joe Massa’s death at Northern Beaches Hospital.
Legislation announced on Thursday — Joe’s Law — will prohibit governments from privatising public hospitals with emergency, surgical and inpatient services under partnerships with private hospital providers.
“The bottom line here is, if you walk into an ED, you’re getting world’s best treatment, and no-one’s worrying about the budget,” Premier Chris Minns told reporters on Thursday.
“Clearly, that didn’t happen for baby Joe and the Massas have shown that we need to do everything possible to ensure that another family doesn’t go through the same tragedy.”
