Professor Nick Talley is stepping down from his role as editor-in-chief of The Medical Journal of Australia before the end of the year.

Australian Doctor asked the gastroenterologist to reflect on his tenure, the current state of medical publishing and the medical research that most excites him.

Australian Doctor: You mention in your latest MJA editorial the importance of quality peer review during the pandemic. But given the rise of websites like Retraction Watch, do you have concerns?

Professor Nick Talley: Retractions have always been a pathway to correct the public record, and even the major journals sometimes miss fatal flaws in the review process, especially if more rushed, as arguably has occurred in the pandemic.
