Professor Richard Scolyer’s posthumous message: ‘It was unlikely I was aware of my decline over my final weeks’
Professor Scolyer was a world-leading researcher on immunotherapy, and then broke new ground by volunteering himself for an experimental treatment.
Professor Richard Scolyer has died from glioblastoma aged 59.
The melanoma researcher, who volunteered to undergo experimental immunotherapy to treat his own cancer, had prepared a statement to be published after his death.
In it, he expressed his hope that by becoming a test subject, he had created a platform to eventually save future cancer patients.
“Whilst cancer may not define us, our ability to empathise with and have compassion towards others does,” he wrote.
