Professor Simon Willcock: Why Scott Morrison is right to complain about ATAGI

The Prime Minister says the 'very cautious' advice given by the expert group is partly to blame for delays in the vaccine rollout

A leading GP has come out in support of Scott Morrison after the Prime Minister blamed ATAGI for slowing down the country’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout.

Professor Simon Willcock says, while he is no major fan of Mr Morrison, the expert advisory group deserves some blame for discouraging uptake of the AstraZeneca vaccine — originally meant to be the bedrock of Australia’s fight against COVID-19.

In a radio interview yesterday, the Prime Minister said: “I know ATAGI has been very cautious and that had a massive impact on the rollout of the vaccine program. It really did.

“It slowed it considerably and it put us behind, and we wish that wasn’t the result but it was. Those decisions are made independent of government, and should be.”
