PSR uses customised software to detect GP supervisor’s dodgy MBS billings

The software revealed that Dr Chin Ven Tan had altered nearly 4000 entries in his clinical records in an attempt to escape punishment.

A GP supervisor has been found guilty of altering medical records on an “industrial scale” in an attempt to cover up his inappropriate Medicare claims.

Dr Chin Ven Tan was originally referred to the PSR watchdog after a review found that in 2019/20 he had billed a higher number of 721 and 723 MBS items than 99% of GPs.

In fact, his claims were so high that almost 28% of his consults involved a chronic disease management item of one kind or another.

It meant that, on some days, he was providing between 16 and 32 chronic disease management services, as well as level C consults, health assessments and mental health services.
