Psychedelic prescribing guidelines ‘virtually unworkable’

A new group of psychedelic practitioners say they want less restrictive guidelines for prescribing MDMA and psilocybin.

A new psychedelic practitioner group is calling on the TGA and the psychiatrists’ college to relax what it claims are “virtually unworkable” guidelines for MDMA and psilocybin prescribing.

The TGA downscheduled the two drugs on 1 July, allowing authorised psychiatrists to prescribe MDMA for PTSD and psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression.

Psychiatrists must obtain approval from a Human Research Ethics Committee before applying to the TGA for authorised prescriber status.

But the Australian Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Practitioners (AMAPP), which formed after the TGA decision and has drawn up its own guidelines for psychiatrist practitioner accreditation, says the rules are “overly cautious”.
