Psychiatrist to repay $418,000 in rebates after misusing rTMS Medicare items: PSR
A psychiatrist will repay Medicare $418,000 after inappropriately billing Medicare for repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, charging administration fees to bulk-billed patients and letting another practitioner use their provider number.
The latest update from the Professional Services Review (PSR) says the psychiatrist came to its attention because they had billed repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) items more frequently than 99% of their colleagues.
Items 14216 and 14219 — both with an 85% rebate of $182.30 — cover treatment mapping for initial and subsequent courses of rTMS, respectively.
Two other items, 14217 and 14220, provide rebates for up to 35 initial treatments and 15 subsequent treatments, respectively. They have an 85% rebate of $156.40.
