Psychiatrist describes prescribing MDMA to first Australian patient

The drug was reclassified by the TGA on 1 July last year.

A Sydney psychiatrist has written Australia’s first MDMA prescription for a patient with PTSD, almost seven months after the TGA’s landmark decision to downschedule MDMA and psilocybin.

Dr Ted Cassidy from the Monarch Mental Health Group (MMHG), which has its main clinic in Sydney, says he initiated treatment for a patient with chronic treatment-resistant PTSD on 19 January.

He is one of only five psychiatrists currently approved to prescribe MDMA.

He told AusDoc the treatment was administered in Melbourne because NSW regulations restricted MDMA administration to hospital facilities.
