Leading psychiatrists and lawyers will come together this weekend to discuss the clinical and medicolegal aftermath of the inquest into the Westfield killings.

In April 2024, Joel Cauchi, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, killed six people with a 30cm hunting knife at a shopping centre in Sydney’s Bondi Junction before a police officer shot him dead. 

The case has led to public condemnation over the care of private psychiatrist Dr Andrea Boros-Lavack, who last treated him four years before the attack.

Among the 23 recommendations from the coroner’s inquest was that she be referred to the Queensland Office of the Health Ombudsman for investigation over alleged failings in her care.
