Vindication: Court order secures NSW hospital psychiatrists 20% pay rise
NSW public psychiatrists will receive a pay increase of effectively 20% over last year after an industrial court’s decision on Friday.
More than 100 psychiatrists handed in their notice in February to protest their low pay compared with counterparts in other states, prompting NSW Health to offer 10% “retention strategy” allowance while the state’s Industrial Relations Commission (IRC) ruled on whether a failure to pay psychiatrists adequately was causing workforce shortages.
The IRC’s full bench has now ruled in favour of paying the psychiatrists more.
“It is no exaggeration to describe the state of mental health care in the NSW public system as being in crisis,” said IRC vice-president Justice David Chin.
