Push for longer scripts will risk harming patients, RACGP warned

Dr David Leaf fears opportunities for preventive health checks will be lost with the college’s proposal for 15 month scripts

A proposal to allow 15-month prescriptions could increase preventable diseases and place pressure on doctors to write longer scripts, a GP is warning.

Earlier this week, RACGP president Dr Nicole Higgins said GPs should have the option of writing 15-month scripts if clinically appropriate, instead of the typical six months.

The move would save patients money and free up time for GPs, she said.

It was part of a suite of cost-saving measures the college proposed for May’s federal budget.
