Push for nurses to prescribe abortion drugs

Nurses could one day be able to prescribe abortion drugs in Victoria under a proposal before the state’s Parliament.
MP Fiona Patten wants the state’s drug register updated to allow the reform, although she has offered few details on what training or medical supervision would be provided to nurses who signed up.
The TGA would also need to support the move, but Ms Patten, who represents the pro-choice Reason Party, says it is needed to improve access to medical abortions.
“Across Australia, only 5% of GPs are registered to prescribe abortion medication, and this drops to below 1% in regional areas,” Ms Patten said.
