Qld payroll tax fix worth short-term pain, says accountant

A new payroll tax ruling in Queensland will mean short-term costs for GP practices as they restructure but ultimately beats the alternative, a tax adviser says.

The Queensland Revenue Office confirmed this week that patient payments made directly to GPs would not be hit with payroll tax despite payments from practices to GPs possibly counting as wages.

Paul Copeland, director of accounting firm William Buck, called the ruling “a great clarification” and “a big win”.

This was despite the short-term pain for GP practices that restructured their cashflow to avoid payroll tax.
