RACGP asks TGA to remove isotretinoin prescribing restrictions

The college says GPs have the skills to prescribe the drug.

The RACGP has lodged a TGA application to let GPs prescribe isotretinoin for moderate to severe acne or treatment-resistant rosacea.

While an S4 drug, isotretinoin scripts are restricted to other specialists under the S4 subcategory due to its potentially severe side effects, including teratogenicity.

However, the RACGP has advocated in different states for changes to poisons legislation to let GPs prescribe the drug.

Last year, RACGP Queensland chair Dr Cathryn Hester said GPs were completely capable of screening patients for isotretinoin’s contraindications as she called on the State Government to loosen the restrictions.
