RACGP calls on GPs to share stories of pharmacist prescribing gone wrong
RACGP Victoria chair Dr Anita Munoz wants GPs to make a submission to a consultation that could end in greater prescribing powers for pharmacists.
The RACGP is urging GPs to send examples of poor pharmacist prescribing to the Pharmacy Board of Australia as it considers allowing pharmacists across Australia to prescribe S4 and S8 drugs.
RACGP Victoria chair Dr Anita Munoz says GPs have already told the college about pharmacists misdiagnosing a pregnancy as a UTI or misdiagnosing an ulcerative BCC as cold sores.
“If you don’t feed these kinds of incidents back, they just stay as a quiet individual harm,” Dr Munoz told 6minutes.
“We’ve seen patients who ultimately were diagnosed with syphilis or turned out to be pregnant delay care because they were told that antibiotics would probably fix their UTI — which they didn’t have.
