The RACGP will axe over 50 jobs as it faces the prospect of a multimillion-dollar deficit due to COVID-19 and inflation.

The job cuts amount to 7-8% of its total workforce or 15% of jobs outside of GP training, which has been shielded from the axe.

RACGP president Dr Nicole Higgins said the move was about “setting us up for the future, so we don’t end up where we have been before” — a reference to the college’s near-collapse 20 years ago.

Speaking on Wednesday, college CEO Paul Wappett said the goal was to shake $10 million in annual spending via cuts to jobs, consultancy fees and flights.Â
