The RACGP has demanded an apology for GPs from journalists, saying an independent Medicare compliance review had debunked media reports of widespread rorts.

Doctors’ groups say they have been vindicated after the government commissioned report, released on Tuesday, found most non-compliance was accidental.

College president Dr Nicole Higgins said this confirmed GPs had been “slandered by baseless claims of ‘rorting’ for no good reason”, in a series of reports late last year.

“We have been vindicated and we await an apology,” Dr Higgins said on Twitter.
